We propose comparison of the key ecological characteristics of communities of xylophagous insects. The comparison will be based on quantitative, large datasets obtained by (i) insect rearing from timber baits [TB] and/or (ii) trapping by flight-intercept traps [FIT] on three tropical and two temperate sites from four regions: Oriental (Borneo), Neotropical (Panama), Australian (New Guinea), and Palearctic (Czech Republic). The analyses will utilize existing TB and/or FIT data from PNG, Panama and the Czech Republic. To broaden the scope, new TB and FIT data will be collected in the Czech Republic and Malaysia. The main aim of analysis of the TB data is to compare diversity, host-specificity, stratification and microclimatic preferences of xylophagous insects in the temperate and the three tropical regions. The FIT sampling programs will allow for investigation of the detailed patterns of vertical stratification of insects in tropical lowland, temperate lowland and montane forests.
