Petrologie and geochemical character of volcanic rocks - especially basic ones - are sensitive indicators of their geotectonic and palaeogeographic settings. Volcanic rocks suitable for such a study occur in the Devonian sedimentary basins at the NE marg in of the Bohemian Massif. The most remarkable and so far little studied is a volcanic complex in the S part of the Vrbno Group (Silesicum) that is petrologically extremely variable and is related to paleontologically dated rocks. Locally nearly intact v olcanic textures little influenced by low grade metamorphic overprint suggest that a modern geochemical research (petrology, whole rock geochemistry, isotopes, mineral chemistry) can yield interesting results contributing to the discussion about petrogen esis of the volcanic association at the divergent settings, with a particular reference to the Variscan orogeny.
