For acid mine drainages (AMD), considerably polluting areas in vicinity of
abandoned mines, is typical occurrence of recently precipitated various
oxides, sulphates, phosphates, etc. They act as the most important
geochemical barrier for various inorganic pollutants. The scope of this
project will be detailed research of geochemical evolution of AMD waters and
recently formed mineral phases, their spatio-temporal changes during period
of monitoring, solving of secondary phases stabilities and understanding of
relationships among various mineral phases. No less importance will be
determining of type and bond strength of pollutants binded into the
sediments and their changes during aging of such sediments. For subsequent
thermodynamic modelling of secondary phases stabilities and prediction of
element speciation in solution, full-scale database, including as extensive
geochemical and mineralogical data as possible, is necessary. Three
different locality have been chosen to represent model examples of AMD in
Czech Republic, where detailed research of acid sulphate mine waters and
processes of precipitation will be carried out. For better processes
understanding operating in nature, long-term experiments will be performed
in laboratory. It is essential to understand processes running in AMD in
order to assess their environmental impact.
